How to Prepare: The Study Plan
Part of The MCAT. A good plan is built around the right kind of studying, for the right amount of time, in the life you actually have. If you are carrying classes, a job, or family responsibilities, the plan has to account for those things from the start.
Start with the hours, not the fantasy
There is no published total. No official body states a study-hour norm for the MCAT, the AAMC's own preparation pages do not, and every specific figure in circulation traces back to a prep company or an admissions consultant.1 So this page will not hand you a number to hit. An invented total is worse than none, because it stops being a plan and becomes a thing to feel behind against.
The arithmetic you can trust is your own. Count the hours you genuinely own in a week, multiply by the weeks between now and the date you are considering, and that is your budget. It is a fact about your life rather than a target somebody set for you.
Three months at 25 hours a week can work if you have a light semester or a free summer. Five or six months at 10 to 15 hours a week may be the more realistic plan if you are working or carrying a full course load. One or two months means something closer to full-time study. That is possible for some people and not available to others.
Whether your budget is enough gets answered by your practice trajectory rather than by its size. The diagnostic tells you where you started and the full-lengths tell you whether the work is moving you, and that is the only version of this question anyone can answer for you.
The point is to choose a window you can keep. The timing guide covers how the study window fits with coursework and the application cycle. This page is about what to do inside that window.
A plan you can repeat beats a plan with bigger study days.
Take a diagnostic before you build the plan
Start with a full-length practice test before serious preparation. It may be discouraging for a day. It is still useful information.
The diagnostic full-length tells you what you already know, what you have forgotten, and what kind of work the exam asks you to do. It also keeps you from building a calendar around a vague feeling that you are “behind” or “pretty good.” You need some idea of where you are starting.
Do not treat the first score as a prediction of your ceiling. Treat it as a starting point.
Where to find one
You can use the AAMC's sample exam or a reputable third-party full-length as your baseline. The Resource Tier List explains the difference and points to the current options. Start with a diagnostic before committing to a course or a large set of materials. Verify current availability before planning around a specific resource.
Save the scored AAMC full-lengths for later in the plan. They are more valuable when you need the clearest read on readiness, not when you are only trying to learn where you begin.
Use phases, but do not build walls between them
Preparation usually moves through a few phases. They overlap more than the neat version suggests:
- Build knowledge. Learn or relearn the material.
- Retain it. Revisit it often enough that it stays available.
- Apply it. Use questions, passages, graphs, and experiments.
- Simulate the exam. Practice the timing, stamina, and decisions under pressure.
- Recover and adjust. Leave enough room to sleep, reset, and change the plan when the evidence says it is not working.
If one of these is missing, the plan gets lopsided. Content review without retention fades. Retention without questions creates false confidence. Questions without review become a pile of numbers. Full-lengths without recovery make you better at being exhausted, not necessarily better at the MCAT.
1. Learn and refresh the material
Review biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, psychology, and sociology. In the early part of the plan, you may spend roughly 70% of your time learning or reviewing and 30% answering questions.
Do not make this a season of passive reading. After you review a topic, try to use it. Work a few questions. Explain the mechanism out loud. Make sure you can recognize the idea when it appears in a new setting.

Do not choose a separate resource for every subject unless you have a specific reason. A workable content setup might use Kaplan books as the backbone, Khan Academy for topics that need another explanation, or ExamKrackers if you prefer a shorter review. The resource matters less than whether you can keep using it and then move into practice.
2. Turn knowledge into practice
As the plan develops, the balance should shift toward questions. You may spend roughly 70% of your time doing questions and reviewing them, and 30% filling in the content gaps those questions expose.
This is where the score usually starts to move. The MCAT asks you to apply information, not recite a chapter. A question you missed is useful if you can work out why you missed it. Was the content unfamiliar? Did you misread the passage? Did you bring in an assumption? Did you rush?
Keep a record of those patterns. “I got it wrong” is not a review. “I chose the answer because I ignored the graph's axis” gives you something to fix.
3. Add full-length practice
Full-lengths should enter the plan gradually and become more important as test day approaches. Take them under real conditions: timed sections, scheduled breaks, no phone, and no convenient interruptions.
There is no published number here either, so the count comes from what actually exists: take every official AAMC full-length, because they are the closest thing to the exam and there is a fixed, small number of them, and add third-party exams only when you want more stamina reps than the official set provides.2 That gives you a floor set by the AAMC's own product list rather than by anybody's guess. The review afterward matters more than collecting a big number of scores.
Save the best practice for the end
The official AAMC full-lengths are the closest practice to the actual exam. Save the scored versions for the final stretch, often the last several weeks, so they can give you the clearest read on readiness. Use third-party exams earlier for stamina, timing, and extra practice. Verify the current official practice lineup before you map out the final stretch.3
Do not burn the official exams early because you want a score that feels more representative. You may need those exams later when the decision is real.
And review every full-length. Go through the missed questions and the guesses you got right. If you cannot explain why the right answer is right and why your answer was wrong, the test is not finished when you submit it.
Put the resources in the right phase
The resources do not all belong in the plan at the same time.
Early content review
Use one content backbone. That might be Kaplan books, ExamKrackers, Khan Academy, or a course you already have access to. Use the Exam Blueprint to make sure you are covering the right material instead of trusting a company's table of contents blindly.
Add Anki only after you understand what you are trying to remember. AnKing, MileDown, JackSparrow, and Mr. Pankow are common community choices, but you do not need all of them. Making your own cards is also a completely viable option, especially for concepts you keep missing in practice or details that are specific to your own gaps. A smaller deck you review consistently is more useful than a huge deck you abandon.
Start CARS early with a manageable habit. Jack Westin's daily passages are a common option. You can also use Khan Academy or another source for additional practice. Do not spend your official AAMC CARS material all at once if your test date is still far away.
Middle practice phase
Begin using a question bank deliberately. UWorld is a common choice because students tend to value its detailed explanations. Jack Westin, Kaplan, Blueprint, and other companies offer alternatives. The Resource Tier List explains the tradeoffs.
The percentage matters less than the review. Go back to the question and classify the miss:
- content gap;
- reasoning error;
- passage-reading error;
- calculation or interpretation error; or
- timing or attention problem.
That classification tells you what to do next. A content gap may send you back to Khan Academy or a book. A reasoning error may require more questions. A retention gap may justify a few targeted Anki cards. Buying another QBank does not automatically solve any of them.
Final practice phase
Move toward the official AAMC material and full-length exams. This is when the official question style and interface matter most. Use the Section Bank and Question Packs as part of deliberate practice, not as items to finish blindly.
Third-party full-lengths from Blueprint, Altius, Kaplan, Princeton Review, or other providers can help with stamina earlier. Their scores should not outrank your AAMC data. Treat them as practice exams, not admissions predictions.
Three realistic stacks
A self-directed stack: AAMC planning tools, Khan Academy, one Anki deck, Jack Westin daily CARS, and official AAMC practice when you reach the final phase.
A core-resource stack: one content source, AAMC official materials, and UWorld or another question bank for the period when you are ready for heavy practice. You can leave out a full commercial course if you can build and follow the schedule yourself.
A structure-first stack: a guided program from Blueprint, Kaplan, Princeton Review, ExamKrackers, Altius, or another provider, plus official AAMC practice. This can make sense if accountability is the problem. It is not automatically the best choice for an independent student.
The stack should follow the problem. If you cannot explain the material, start with content. If you know the material but cannot apply it, practice. If you cannot maintain a schedule, consider structure or accountability. Identify the bottleneck before adding another resource.
Build the week around your actual life
Count backward from the test date and write down the hours you can honestly give each week. Include classes, work, commuting, family responsibilities, sleep, and the occasional week when life goes badly. Do not borrow every hour from the version of your life that exists only on paper.
If you work 20 hours a week, you have a different study plan from someone who does not work. That is a calendar difference, not a character one. The longer plan may be the better plan because it survives contact with your life.
Planning tools can help you turn a test date and available days into a calendar. Decide how many hours you actually own before you build the schedule.
What this can look like
These are examples, not templates you have to copy.
A student working during the semester
Suppose you have classes, a 20-hour job, and six months before the exam. A workable week might be:
- Monday: 60–90 minutes of content review and spaced repetition.
- Tuesday: 60 minutes of practice questions, followed by a short review.
- Wednesday: no MCAT work, or only the reviews you can complete without stress.
- Thursday: 60–90 minutes of content review and questions.
- Saturday: a two- to three-hour block for mixed practice and deeper review.
- Sunday: a short planning session and rest, with a full-length added every few weeks as the exam gets closer.
No single day there is heavy, but over many weeks it builds steady contact with the material. If you miss one weekday, you do not need to turn Saturday into a ten-hour punishment session. Move the task, reduce the task, or let it go and continue.
A student with a lighter summer
Suppose you have ten or twelve weeks with fewer classes and less work. You might use mornings for a content block, afternoons for questions, and one or two days each week for a full-length or its review. You still need a day or partial day with no MCAT work. A summer plan can be more concentrated, but it should not assume that every day will be your most productive day.
The structure matters more than the exact clock:
- learn a manageable topic;
- retrieve it later rather than only rereading it;
- use questions to expose gaps;
- review the gaps;
- return to the material after time has passed.
Consistency is a study skill
The best plan is usually not the one with the biggest study days. It is the one you can repeat when the first week of motivation is gone.
There will probably come a time in medical school when you look back at the MCAT and think, “That was nothing compared with what I am studying now.” The exams do not generally get kinder as you move through medicine. There are more subjects, more detail, and less time to feel fully ready.
Take that as a useful preview. The MCAT is one of the first times you have to build a large body of knowledge, retain it over months, and perform under pressure. For some people, that process becomes a crucible that breaks their confidence. For others, it becomes the first place they build habits that carry into medical school. Consistency is a study skill you will keep needing.
Choose a regular place and a regular starting cue. Put the phone somewhere else. Decide what “done” means before you begin: 30 questions reviewed, one topic recalled, or one passage analyzed. Small, completed sessions give you a record you can trust. Six hours of highlighting does not.
Rest belongs in the plan. Sleep helps you retain what you studied. Time away from the material keeps one difficult day from turning into a week of avoidance. You are preparing for a long exam and a long career, not trying to win a punishment contest against yourself.
When the plan starts breaking
Most plans do not fail all at once. You stop reviewing questions, the Anki cards or notes pile up, you move one topic to tomorrow, and suddenly the calendar is a week behind.
When that happens, do not rebuild the entire plan in one exhausted night. Triage it:
- Stop adding new resources.
- Keep the next important practice block.
- Review the mistakes that will teach you the most.
- Cut low-value tasks and decorative planning.
- Recalculate the remaining hours honestly.
- Move the test date if the math no longer works.
If your schedule only works by losing sleep, skipping meals, or pretending your job and family do not exist, the schedule is the problem. Changing it is acting on the information you have.
